Barrier Properties of Metalized Films Explained

Why do metalized films protect products so well? We break down the barrier mechanisms that make them the first choice for sensitive applications.

Barrier Properties of Metalized Films Explained

The barrier performance of metalized films comes from the combination of the polymer substrate and the ultra-thin aluminum layer. Together, they create a multi-layer shield that protects products from moisture, oxygen, light and aroma transfer.

Moisture Barrier

Metalized PET films achieve moisture vapor transmission rates (MVTR) below 0.5 g/m²/day — orders of magnitude better than uncoated polymer films. This is critical for snacks, pharmaceuticals and other moisture-sensitive products.

Oxygen Barrier

The aluminum layer blocks oxygen transmission to less than 1 cc/m²/day. This extends shelf life and preserves flavor, color and nutritional value.

Light Barrier

The reflective metal layer blocks visible and UV light, protecting light-sensitive products like vitamins, beverages and dairy.

For most barrier applications, metalized PET delivers the best balance of protection, cost and processability.
