Metalized films are a class of polymer films coated with an ultra-thin layer of metal — typically aluminum — through a process called vacuum metallization. By depositing just 30 to 50 nanometers of metal onto a substrate, manufacturers can transform an ordinary plastic film into a high-performance material with the optical and barrier properties of aluminum foil at a fraction of the weight and cost.

The Manufacturing Process

Vacuum metallization takes place inside a sealed chamber under high vacuum. The aluminum is heated to its evaporation point, and the vapor condenses uniformly onto the surface of the moving film web. The result is a tightly bonded metal layer with controlled optical density and exceptional uniformity.
